Why Change Is So Darn Hard, Neuroscientifically Speaking!

Change can be hard. Especially when it’s unexpected and time is of the essence. But why? There are a lot of theories out there, but let’s take a closer look at why change is so difficult for us to accept and how we can make it easier on ourselves.

The Limbic System & Fear Responses:

The brain’s limbic system is responsible for our fear responses and stress reactions. Whenever we experience something new, our brains enter into alert mode, ready to protect us from potential danger or harm. This fear-based response can be helpful if we are in an actual dangerous situation, but it can also prevent us from moving forward with changes that might benefit us.

Neuroplasticity & The Power of Habit:

Change also requires more effort than simply maintaining the status quo because our brains are designed to conserve energy by relying on habits and routines. The plasticity of our neural pathways lets us create new behaviors over time, but this process requires effort and repetition before these new behaviors become automatic. The same goes for breaking old habits; it takes time and consistency to form new neural pathways that lead to different behavior.

Cognitive Flexibility & Adaptability:

Lastly, cognitive flexibility—the ability to think flexibly in order to solve problems—is key to adaptability during times of change. It’s important not only to understand why change is hard for us neurobiologically, but also how we can use flexible thinking to view things differently when needed. This includes being able to look at things from different perspectives and come up with creative solutions when obstacles arise due to changes in our environment or circumstances.

What’s In It For You?

Change may be hard, but understanding how the brain works helps us better prepare ourselves for dealing with it. By knowing how our fear response works and why we rely on habits and routines, as well as developing cognitive flexibility through practice, we can better navigate the waters of change and arrive safely on the other side!
