Overcoming Setbacks: How Letting go of Running Impacts a Real Estate Business!

Passion is a driving force that propels humans toward success and fulfillment. It provides the motivation and determination needed to overcome obstacles and achieve great things. In the case of my client Sharon, her love for running played a significant role in her life until multiple foot surgeries forced her to give it up.

However, the inability to let go of her lost passion for running has had a profound impact on her Real Estate business. In this blog post, we will explore the neuroscience behind the connection between passion and success, ways to discover similar benefits in alternative activities, and how embracing change can revitalize a business.

Passion is not limited to personal pursuits; it has a direct impact on professional success as well. When individuals are passionate about their work, they are more likely to go the extra mile, seek innovative solutions, and remain committed during challenging times. It fuels their motivation and inspires them to continuously improve and strive for excellence.

Multiple foot surgeries became the turning point in Sharon’s life. Running, which was once her greatest passion and source of joy, had to be relinquished due to physical limitations. It was a significant setback that not only affected her physically but also emotionally and psychologically. Letting go of something so integral to her identity was a difficult process that hindered her ability to adapt and grow in her Real Estate business, forget about doing the most basic of real estate activities.

To understand the impact of letting go of running, we dove into the world of neuroscience and habits. Our brains are wired to seek out and repeat activities that provide pleasure and reward. Running, with its release of endorphins and sense of accomplishment, created a positive feedback loop that became deeply ingrained in Sharon’s neural pathways.

Running offers numerous benefits beyond physical fitness. It reduces stress, improves mental clarity, boosts discipline, and promotes overall well-being. With the inability to continue running, my client was deprived of these advantages. However, the good news is that similar benefits can be found in other activities and sports. Or like I always say we have to find a way to give our brain the crack in a different way.

It was essential for Sharon to identify alternative physical activities or sports that can provide similar benefits to running. We started this process with a self exploration: “What is it you love about running?”

I shared from my own life. I was a sprinter and Volleyball player and due to multiple knee surgeries I had to give up both. Depressing? For sure. But I discovered what I loved about those activities: generating power. These days I kayak, paddleboard, hike and lift weights - talk about generating power. My joints are healthier, so overall what seemed at first so insurmountable has turned into a real win.

We looked at ideas that others have pursued to experience the same endorphin rush and fulfillment that people get from running:

1. Swimming: Immersing yourself in the water and engaging in rhythmic movements can provide a low-impact, full-body workout. The repetitive nature of swimming can induce a meditative state, reduce stress, and release endorphins.

2. Cycling: Hopping on a bicycle and pedaling through scenic routes can provide an exhilarating experience. Cycling not only enhances cardiovascular fitness but also stimulates the release of endorphins, promoting a sense of joy and well-being.

3. Yoga: Practicing yoga combines physical movements, breath control, and meditation. It promotes flexibility, strength, and mindfulness, leading to reduced stress levels and a heightened sense of calmness.

4. Hiking: Exploring nature and embarking on challenging hiking trails can offer a physical workout while providing a sense of adventure and connection with the outdoors. The combination of physical exertion and natural surroundings can boost mood and increase endorphin production.

Sharon has not found her exact replacement for running yet. But the simple act of allowing herself to try out different activities to give her the self identified “powerful” feeling of running has also given her permission to chase her business dream.

In her continued effort to revitalize her Real Estate business, we continue to incorporate new habits into her daily routine. By embracing alternative activities, Sharon can restore the sense of discipline, stress reduction, and mental clarity that running once provided. Incorporating these habits will not only benefit her personal well-being but also enhance her drive in the competitive world of Real Estate.

What’s In It For You?

Letting go of a lost passion is undoubtedly challenging, but it is a crucial step towards personal growth and professional success. By understanding the science behind habits and identifying alternative activities with similar benefits, it is 100% possible to find new passions and revitalize a waning Real Estate business.

Embracing change - the very nature of Real Estate, adapting to new circumstances, and finding balance between personal passions and professional pursuits are the keys to achieving overall fulfillment and success.
